The animal is rarely studied making population surveys non-existent. The Saola is distributed through eastern Indochina, in areas of Vietnam and Laos The results of an preliminary Population Viability Analysis, conducted by the Saola Working Group at its meeting in November, 2015, indicate that even if immediate cessation of all hunting threats could be achieved, it is likely that all Saola subpopulations would drift to extinction in the next 10 to 15 years.

Established in 1964, the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species has evolved to become the world’s most comprehensive information source on the global conservation status of animal, fungi and plant species. The body of the Saola ranges in colour from chestnut brown, to red, to almost black, with a dark, narrow stripe running along the back which ends in a small and fluffy black tail. It is believed that the farmed population is over 2,000,000.

In Vietnam, the saola population was originally estimated at a "few hundred" individuals although this figure is now thought to be too optimistic. In 2001, the Lao population was estimated to be between 70 and 700 individuals, with current estimates favouring the lower range of this figure. The actual size of the remaining population is unknown.
