The body of the Saola ranges in colour from chestnut brown, to red, to almost black, with a dark, narrow stripe running along the back which ends in a small and fluffy black tail. It is believed that the farmed population is over 2,000,000.
In Vietnam, the saola population was originally estimated at a "few hundred" individuals although this figure is now thought to be too optimistic. In 2001, the Lao population was estimated to be between 70 and 700 individuals, with current estimates favouring the lower range of this figure. The actual size of the remaining population is unknown.
